Money, Mother’s Day, and More!

I can’t lie, I am getting sooo excited for buying this house!  Probably because I drive by it twice a day and mostly because I got to visit and take measurements last weekend!

Yep, I spent a couple hours one night with a tape measure and my laptop drawing out the first floor.  This way I can play around with furniture layouts before we even move in – so exciting!

On the financial side of things, I’m one month into saving for the down payment, and things are looking good…

April Goal Thermometer

I have saved 31% of my goal, and there are still 5 months to go! (I did start off with a nice chunk on day one of saving, so don’t expect another 31% jump next month!)  Just keeping expenses to a minimum, and saving every bit I have leftover every week seems to be working.  That plus I FINALLY got my VT tax return back.  It took weeks and it was complicated because I had to file in VT and Mass, since I lived there part of last year – but thankfully it’s all sorted out, I got my $ back, AND I don’t have to do it again next year! (Why?! Because I’m a Vermonter, and as much as my manager wants me to move back to Mass, I’m staying put!)

So, what’s been happening on the homefront?  I have a little catching up to do… two weekends ago, we had a busy shopping day, getting our weekly fix of groceries – Costco, then Hannafords.  I know, who choses to take their kid shopping with them – usually they have to.  But not me, I for one LOVE to get out of the house, since I work at home all week, and the weekends are my time with Avery so, he comes along and he has so much fun.

He was a big helper, going around finding things on our list.  And he LOVES to put items on the belt when we check out.

And if he behaves well and helps out, he gets doggy bones.  Yeah, the woman in line in front of us gave us a pretty odd look when he asked if he could have his doggy bones now.  Doggy bones are a candy in the little quarter machines when you leave the store.  They are one of his favorites, so it’s a nice treat and incentive for a hard morning’s work of shopping.

And as if that wasn’t enough work for a three year old… he helped me clean all three vehicles that afternoon.IMG_6266

We found out last summer how much Avery loved playing with the hose, so when I asked him if he wanted to help wash the cars, he jumped with joy, litterally!  And man was it a feat cleaning the vehicles – mine hadn’t gotten a thourough clean since last fall.  I did a quick vaccum a month or so ago, but finally it’s really clean.  All those stale cheerios and missing toys are no more.  I even found my missing set of car keys!  I had sucked up a dinosaur with the shop vac on accident, opened the cover and there was the little orange guy, and also my spare key!  I didn’t even know it was in there. Whew – good catch!

So, when we’re not outside soaking up the rays (it was in the 70s and 80s here for almost 2 weeks straight), I’m inside baking up something new.  I started in the winter when I made blueberry muffins for Steve, and since then, I make a batch of something once a week.  This past week was cupcakes.IMG_6327

I sent those four to my gram and gramps.  The rest Dad and Steve got.  And thanks to my Nana, I have a bunch of new (new to me, they are from really old cooking books) recipes to try out.

Ok, now we’re caught up to last weekend.  On Friday night, Steve and I had a picnic dinner on the tailgate of his truck on the lake.

The view was much better than our mediocre chinese food.  And Saturday morning it was nice and windy so, we flew kites…IMG_6359

That little green spec is Avery.  He’s flying our forever old send in your kool aid points kite.   He did pretty well, running to get it up, letting the line out, until he let go a few times and got it caught in a tree.IMG_6360

Steve was kind enough to climb the tree and get it down – all for the price of looking like he had a fight with a very mad cat 🙂
For Mother’s Day,  Avery made me a card and a gift at school and one at home.IMG_6378

Yeah, whatever you do, don’t tell this kid a secret.  We hid flowers for Mimi at Uncle Johns (I bought them on Tuesday, so we wouldn’t have a limited selection come the weekend when everyone was out buying flowers), but apparently Avery spilled the beans.  No biggie, we get hanging flower baskets for Mom every year, so she knew they were coming.

We spent the morning and early afternoon with Nana and Papa on their screened-in porch.  Avery had fun with the men, throwing rocks in the water and walking around outside.  He even sat on the porch with Papa for a while.IMG_6379

We shared some pictures and videos of Avery and he showed his math skills on the ipad.  Oh and we had a yummy lunch – I wasn’t hungry for dinner 6 hours later.IMG_6380

Then we were off to Gram and Gramps where Avery and MiMi got caught in the rain outside!  We played Go Fish with Grandma and saw some family too.IMG_6381

Oh, what are some other random misc things going on?  Oh, Mimi and Grampy celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary.  I made them a treat on the day, but they went out and celebrated with friends the weekend before.  IMG_6312This just means it’s getting closer to my 30th birthday… eeek!

Oh, and with all this nice weather, I put away winter clothes and got out summer clothes (yay for dresses and skirts again!!)  But that also meant going thru Avery’s clothes and putting away things he has outgrown.  I filled a box.IMG_6286

Thankfully, at his last birthday and the holidays, he was gifted lots of bigger clothes, perfect for this summer.  Oh and Mimi bought a few new outfits for him too – shorts and t-shirts perfect for playing outside in.IMG_6287

We got a little rain this week, but the weather is finally staying warm and we’re playing outside every day.  Avery scored a free blow up beach ball at the Pharmacy yesterday when we bought new sunscreen for him at school, and the nice lady gave it to him for free.  Score!  It’s perfect to kick around the front yard.  Little guy is all tuckered out and in bed now… I will soon be in there too.  I forgot how much the sun makes me tired, oh that and running 🙂

Days Gone By

Falling into a routine up here in VT… and posting on the blog hasn’t been part of it.  I promise to post more later.  My office and where Avery sleeps are in the same room, so I can’t get anything done on the computer while the little guy is sleeping.  My sister moved off to grad school this past weekend (Yay, Sarah!), so that freed up her room (which is my childhood bedroom).  I’ve spent the past 3 nights moving my clothes into her closet and organizing and putting away clothes I won’t/don’t wear – purging and organizing feels good after living out of a suitcase the past 3 weeks.

So, here’s a quick recap…

Mother’s Day – Sarah made Mom and I breakfast…

We visited Nana and Papa in the morning, and Grandma and Grandpa in the afternoon.  At Nana and Papa’s Avery played in the Creek with Papa and took a ride on his tractor.

At Grandma and Grandpas, Avery napped.  When he got up, he visited the Ginea Pig and went acorn hunting with Uncle Todd…

Avery brought the acorns home and put them in a squirrel feeder.  He loves acorns and pine cones because of the Elephant Movie (Ice Age) and the squirrel that is always after the acorn.

Joey took me and his Mom to dinner (his family came and we got a nice shot of us ‘kids’).

Joey’s Mom, Sister and her boyfriend gave me the sweetest Mother’s Day gifts… and Sarah, Avery and I got Mom hanging flower baskets for the front porch – we get them for her every year.

And when I came back from dinner, Avery had new clothes on… because he and Aunt Sarah had fun…

Haircut –

New beginnings mean… a new haircut!

I got it all chopped off… It’s crazy how long my hair was.

I treated myself to some highlights (for the 3rd time in my life).  Then a couple days went buy and I swore I looked like Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) in Helix from Notting Hill…

So I went back and got it thinned out a bit and love it now.

Work – Working from home has been going well.  I don’t wear pajamas every day like most people think… I rock my workout clothes so when it’s lunch time, I can go on my run without taking time to change – then a quick shower and change when I get back.

Oh and I’ve never matched my socks, if you’re thinking thats because nobody sees them – I totally wear them with sandals when I bring Avery to school.  Who cares?!

Play – We’ve been pretty busy every night after school… playing inside if it’s raining…

Or in the garage… where Avery’s favorite thing is to draw circles around people.. and dogs.  The dogs tend to not stay still and that makes Avery very mad!

And we play outside if it’s not raining…

We play outside.. even when if the ground is still wet.

Avery’s favorite thing to do when he gets home is play in the garden.  He’s helped Grampy plant seeds and hammer in stakes.

Most recently, Avery helped Grampy plant pumpkins!

Avery loves his green wagon from Easter… he likes to pull it.

And he likes to be pulled in it.

Most nights after dinner we take the dogs for a walk…  After Avery helps with dishes of coarse!

1/2 a mile to the end of the road and back.  Avery walks (or runs!) most of the way, only sometimes asking to be carried.

After our walks, its time for bath, then a snack before bed…

Play Dates – We’ve had two play dates with my childhood friend, Kate, and her two kids. They only live 20 minutes away. We went to their house and played outside and had dinner together.

And our second play date was last night: It was rainy so the kids played in the finished basement (where all of Avery’s toys live), we had a nice dinner, and finished the night with 1/2 a movie (The Elephant Movie, of coarse).IMG_1691

Weekend Fun – Every day starts off with breakfast on the couch (Avery’s got meds on his cheeks from some bug bites) while watching cartoons – usually Thomas the Train or Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Then Grampy takes the boys (dogs and Avery) for a walk in the woods… they come back wet and dirty and all need a bath…

We have some heavy equipment around the house… getting ready to dig up around the house to put in a new drainage system, and Grampy fixed all the holes in the road with this one.  So, Avery has taken full advantage!

While Grampy was out fixing the road, Mister Avery and I cleaned my car!!! First time in a year!!! All the old cheerios are gone!!!

Another fun (long) weekend ahead of us…. may be a rainy one, but it’ll be fun!!!  Enjoy your  (long) weekend.

{Another} Weekend in Vermont

We had another fun filled weekend in Vermont (when are they ever not fun?  oh yeah, when I have to drive thru a snowstorm…thankfully it’s spring and we had a blissful ride up because Avery slept 2/3 of the trip!). In addition to our family 5K on Saturday morning, Avery played outside, we spent time with family & friends for dinner and a bon fire, and we spent Mother’s Day morning with my grandparents… and I took about a zillion pictures, so sit back, this is a long one…

When we got back from the race on Saturday, the rain was holding off, so Avery spent some time outside with Grampy.  Us ‘womenfolk’ stayed inside to prep dinner.  Before I knew it, I could hear the lawnmower doing laps around the house.  Avery loves it.  Then, they were onto bubbles…

Avery loves bubbles… almost as much as our dog, Mickey, growing up.  He used to chase them with his mouth wide open and chomp on every bubble he caught.  Luckily, Avery doesn’t eat them too…

We took a walk around the yard… first Avery played with Dad’s compost bucket, made our way around the back yard where Dad told me about pollinating his apple trees by using a q-tip (cool idea!), checked out the wood shed where Fraiser sniffed around for a mouse and Avery oogled at the snowblower (any car/truck/machine on wheels excites this kid…such a boy!). Avery saw the giant wood pile and just had to climb it…

…oh and so did Fraiser – thanks for the photo bomb, dog.  And this was the best of the many pictures I took…because all the other ones had the dogs butt….

Then Grampy took Avery for a boat ride…

Yeah… kinda missing the water part of a boat ride, but it was good practice for this summer!

Then we were all off for a walk (as if running/walking the 5K wasn’t enough exercise for the day).  We hoped it would calm Avery down so he could take a nap before our guests came over for dinner that night.  Avery loves walks in the stroller and especially with the dogs because he loves to watch them… or walk them himself!

On our walk we had an impromptu photo session – and thanks to instagram, the pics came out pretty awesome…

After all that excitement, Avery was out for a two-hour nap.  We all showered, prepped dinner, and Sarah and I ran out for supplies (beer, cheese, a lime, Mother’s Day hanging flower baskets for Mom, and I grabbed a VT souvinier for Avery’s pen pal in Texas).

Avery woke up rested for an afternoon of fun.  While we waited for the guest to arrive, there were more bubbles…(and dogs bombing my pictures)

Some truck fixin’..

Safety first!

We had the cornhole game setup (my Dad makes these, aren’t they awesome?!), but Avery had a new way of playing…

The things that amuse this kid! Then it was off to join Grampy in the swing…

And take a break to watch Elle-Moo (Avery’s finally got past his trouble gettings stuck on the “L” and now says ‘elmo’… except the ‘mo’ comes out at ‘moo!’) with Grammy

Then the guest arrived, and aside from my graceful moment where I tipped over the picnic table (sorry Nic and Mina!), it was a pretty fun night of grilled food, Sarah and I won corn hole, Avery even took a few bites of veggies thanks to help from Uncle Mike…

Avery ate a whole hot dog, and ended the night with a bath tended to by Mina!

Avery went down pretty well, especially since he had a pacifier tonight…Friday night when we got in, I couldn’t find his pacifier and it’s not like at home when we can drive 1 mile down the road to Walmart, so we cried stuck it out and Avery eventually went down.  So after our race Saturday, we picked up a pacifier at the pharmacy in town and when I gave it to Avery that night, man was he out like a light.

A bon fire, some yummy lemon squares (Mina, send me that recipe!), some fun doctor talk with Nic (he delivers babies!), and I called it a night by 9/930… I was so tired I couldn’t even read 3 pages in my book before I passed out.

Sunday was Mother’s Day!  Grammy had got her flowers the day before, and Avery gave her a homemade card.  Then he helped her make crust for the kiesh we brought to my grandparents for breakfast.

While we were all busy in the kitchen, there was a bang on the window – a bird had flown into it (something that’s happened many times before growing up). So we went outside to investigate…

Avery was hesitant, but he did touch it once!  The  poor thing was so stunned, but he was fine. Then we spent some time at my grandparents house and Avery played with the ORIGINAL Little People farm set…

Avery got tired pretty quickly and we hit the road before noon.  He passed out and slept all the way to Mass.  We made a pit stop for a snack, and then hit the road again…

When we got home, Mommy got some flowers, a card, and a running shirt from her two boys!  So sweet!

Avery was excited to help unpack from the weekend…

And spend some time with Daddy…

Whew… enough pictures?!  Remind me not to take so many pictures this weekend… oh yeah that’s not gonna happened because my parents are coming down for a couple home renovation projects… so yeah, even more pictures to come next week!

Happy Friday!

My First Mother’s Day

If you remember back, we were flying all day, coming back from the wedding in Costa Rica on Mother’s Day.  I honestly forgot it was Mother’s Day until they announced it on the airplane that morning (don’t worry – I had my Mom’s gift already setup).  And Vinay gave me a pretty bracelet before we left on our trip as my gift from him.

But what I didn’t expect, was a gift from Avery!  He’s only 8 months old, so you’re probably wondering what in the world could he get me?  Well, first he made a card…

And this picture frame!

Such a great first Mother’s Day gift!  I’m scoping out where I want it hung… I’m thinking beside my bed…

How was your Mother’s Day?  Did you give or receive any creative gifts?  My Mom got the LOVE photo idea from Pinterest and took the pictures herself.
